r, andnine other state schools where young men between theages of seventeen and twenty are given a course of two tothree years as a preparation for the non-commissionedofficers career. These schools furnish about one-fourthof the number required for the dismounted services. Inaddition, there are regimental schools where selected menare trained. The non-commissioned officers are an excel-lent body of men, generally of long service, who receiveappropriate civil appointments when they leave the colorservice. The relations of confidence and mutual supportbetween the officers and the non-commissioned officers,the only professional soldiers in Germany, are such asone would expect to find between men who have dedi-cated their lives to the military education of the nation,with no hope or desire for other reward than that of asense of national duty faithfully performed in the spherein which their respective attainments and social relationsnaturally place them.
