theheights of the banks and the width of the river must be con-sidered to determine the proper head of sea navigation. If thisobstacle be removed, the limits of sea navigation, so far as re-gards depth of water alone, will be extended to a point near theRancho de Mariscal on the one branch, and to the mouth ofthe Estero Monzapa on the other, distances of near two and fourmiles respectively. Above them it would be impossible to go,for the greatest depth in channel decreases gradually with everymile in both branches. A depth of only three feet occurs beforereaching Almagres or Hidalgo-titlan; and opposite this in theMistan, there is but four feet, till at length it is impossible tobring more than two feet into the main channel at La Horquetathrough the Brazo Apotzongo, and three through the Mistan. With regard to the height of the banks, there exists no point, between Mina-titlan and the nine-feet shoal already referred to, * The published copy has been reduced to one-third the original

If, however, thelimits of sea navigation be extended to the Eancho de Mariscaland the Estero Monzapa, there will be found at each of theseplaces a height of bank sufficient to insure against overflow dur-ing the rainy season. The first, which is on the left bank of theBrazo Apotzongo, about three-quarters of a mile above the junc-tion, and therefore on the Island of Tacamichapa, is an isolatedtable-land of moderate extent, and surrounded by lagoons andlow land, over which it would be exceedingly difficult and ex-pensive to bring a railroad. The second, which is at, and abovethe mouth of the Estero Monzapa, and on the left or westernbank of the Brazo Mistan, about three miles above the junc-tion, is a bluff bank seventeen feet above the lowest level of theriver, and about five above the highest traces of overflow. Itwas impossible, with our means, to penetrate the jungle, withwhich this last is covered, and ascertain it
