The incident was reported aboutthe court, and from the tittle-tattle came the first breath ofscandal which afterwards tarnished so sadly the mirror ofSophie Dorotheas fair name.^ Soon after this the Hanoverian court, except the DuchessSophia, went on a visit to Brunswick, according to theirannual custom, to divert themselves with an opera and thefair.- The Duke and Duchess of Celle were there also, andDuke Antony Ulrich with his family and a numerous court.Antony Ulrich had now become co-regent with his elderbrother, Duke Rudolph Augustus, who, being a scholarand recluse, practically left all government in his hands.It was Antony Ulrich who dictated the policy of the Houseof Brunswick-Wolfenbijttel, and he kept his court sometimesat VVolfenbiittel and sometimes at Brunswick.
