s - 3 •ji;(i THE CONFERENCE OF THE ENTENTE IN PARIS January 18, 1919—April 30, 1919 ON the Quai dOrsay in Paris on January 18 the curtain rose onthe first scene in the final act of the World War drama. Thiswas the formal assembling of the Peace Conference,^ in the famousClock Hall of the Foreign Office. At the head of the council tablewas the gilded chair of the President of France, M. Poincare. Whenall the chairs had been occupied some Indian princes in turbans gaveto the scene its only distinctive costumes. It Avas an assemblage ofthe leading statesmen of the Entente world, German delegates notbeing present.
