About one mile from the lakewe came to a meadow and forded theriver which comes from the pass. The trailitself had been washed out and ended ina place where, from the depth and swift-ness of the current, it was impossible totouch bottom with poles. We had to-find another place, and at length cameout on an open gravel wash and easiertravel. The pass is here most imposing.
