Text Appearing Before Image:
thevessel, the mouth of the pipe being placed under water, pointing stern-wise. The pipe rises to the deck, and atthe upper end of the pipe is a gas-light and valves thatopen inward for the admission of hydrogen gas and at-mospheric air. As soon as enough hydrogen and air haveentered, to wit, two parts of hydrogen to one of oxygen, the mixture takes fire from the gas-light, an explosion en-sues, the valves are closed, and the great pressure pro-duced finds vent at the mouth of the pipe, acting againstthe water and driving the boat ahead. The valves thenopen again, the gases flow in, a new explosion takes place, and so on. These explosions follow with as much rapidityas the motion of a steam-engine piston, and thus the boatsoon acquires a regular velocity. Whether the manufac-ture, cost, and storage of the gas, and the working of thegaseous motor, will equal the economies and conveniencesof steam-power and its propelling appurtenances remainsto be ascertainedby trial. 253 SCIENCE RECORD.

FIELD & COTTON S NEW COMPOUND STEAM-ENGINE. MECHANICS AND ENGINEERING. 269 NEW COMPOUND ENGINE. Our illustration shows the new direct expansive com-pound engine of Messrs. Edward Field and F. M. Cotton,of Chandos Chambers, Adelphi, London, England ; theillustration from Engineering. The arrangement consistsessentially of a high-pressure cylinder placed within thelow-pressure C)rlinder, and moving backward and for-ward upon a fixed piston ; the annular space around thishigh-pressure cylinder is always filled with steam directfrom the boiler, which passes into the cylinder throughthe ports on the lower side, the admission being regulatedby the piston-valves shown in the engraving. By meansof these valves, also, the steam from the smaller cylinderenters the low-pressure cylinder while at the end of eachstroke a small quantity ofsteam passes from the annularreservoir into the low-pressure cylinder, to serve as acushion and to move the valves.
