the incubator. There are one hundred and fif-ty-five ostriches at Hilton, of which seventy-five are thisyears chickens. CULTIVATION OF SUGAR-CANE.It is stated by Wm. Green, of New-Orleans,that if short-ly after the removal of the cane, the stubble is cut smoothlynear the surface of the ground and covered with three orfour inches of soil, the vitality of the plant is preservedfor the succeeding crop, instead of perishing from expo-sure to the weather, and the expense and loss from re-planting avoided. PIPE FERTILIZATION.As an improvement in the prevailing style of agricul-ture, W. H. Pugh, of Chicago, proposes to lay down pipes, porous or perforated on their upper sides, but imperviousbelow, at a suitable distance below the surface, throughwhich water, (either hot or cold,) liquid manure, hot air,or steam may be supplied in such quantities and times asmay be deemed desirable, so that the tiller of the soil mayeither dry, moisten, or warm it to suit his own pleasure. 38o SCIENCE RECORD.

AGRICULTURE AND RURAL ECONOMY. 381 NEW STEAM REAPER AND MOWER. Our engraving shows a new steam reaper and mower, recently patented by Mr. Edward Hayes, of London, Eng-land. The implement consists of a boiler and steam-engine,erected on a light wrought-iron girder-frame, the whole be-ing carried on four wheels, of which the two hind wheelsare utilized for propulsion and the two fore-wheels forsteerage and for carrying the cutting apparatus from offthe ground. The boiler and engine are specially designedto develop a maximum of power with a minimum ofweight; and the steam is used at a pressure of 120 lbs. tothe square inch in the boiler. The piston speed is high, and is applied by suitable intervening mechanism to thedouble motions of actuating the cutter-bar and propellingthe implements by means of the driving wheels. Withthe object of not overloading the frame and machine, thestorage-room for fuel and water is very limited, and ar-rangements must be made for supplying the tender withthes
