English: The Temeraire of 98 guns [plus text, naming Eliab Harvey, Trafalgar, Redoutable and Fougueux [as Fogeux] This is a professionally made souvenir print showing the breaking up of the 'Temeraire' at John Beatson's wharf, Rotherhithe, in late 1838 and at a stage slightly more advanced than in the more amateur view by John's younger brother, William Beatson (see PAD6048): here the buildings behind are rather different, William's rendering probably being more accurate, though the difference may be partly accounted for by the variant viewpoint, this being much more broadside-on. The full title and explanatory text reads: 'The Temeraire of 98 guns. Launched at Chatham 1798. Broken up by Messrs Beatson at Rotherhithe 1838. Was commanded by Capt Eliab Harvey at the glorious Victory of Trafalgar in which action she engaged at the same time the Redoutable & Fogeux [sic] of 74 guns each, compelling both, after a sanguinary conflict to strike their colours. Loss of the Temeraire 47 killed & 76 wounded out of 660.' Harvey was one of only three men named in the House of Commons vote of thanks in January 1806 (the others being Nelson and Collingwood). |
