THE TIMES HISTORY OF THE WAR. 29 and a non-commissioned officer and private whowere helping the wounded man were themselveswounded; then Hall again rushed forwardunder a deadly fire and was actually lifting upthe wotmded man, to take him to shelter, whenhe was mortally wounded in the head. Fisher,too, gave his life, on April 23, 1915, near St.Julian, for he was killed while showing theutmost courage and resource in getting hismachine gun into action. Campbell distin-guished himself at Givenchy on Jime 15, 1915,also as a machine gunner. In his case, as in thatof Fisher, heavy losses had been svtffered by thedetachment and the situation was one of greatperil. Campbell survived that danger and wonthe Cross by his heroism, but later he waswounded and died.
