The guide-bookcalls them the prison of Socrates, and it is gen-erally understood among the people that he wasimprisoned and died there, but there is no evidence tosustain such a supposition. Helived nearly a century after Socrates, and in the year322 B.C., when the Macedonians secured control of thegovernment, fled from Athens across the sea into thePeloponnesus. There he was followed by an officerof the police with a warrant for his arrest. Demos-thenes was prepared for him and received him in thetemple of Poseidon in Calauria.
