*JB?Bi PecuniaryAid Over nine hundredstudents aided byloans and scholar-ships within twentyyears. The income of certain gifts to the Universityaffords one hundred and seven scholarships formeritorious students of slender means. There is,also, the Deems Fund, which provides loans forthe very needy who show unusual merit. The number of scholarships and loans is limited,but they are given without reference to county or State lines, tostudents of talent, character and financial need. These facts mustbe established by testimonials. All applications for scholarshipsand loans must be filed in the Presidents office before August 15th.The former State law giving a scholarship to each county wasrepealed some years ago. FreeTuition This law is applic-able only tostudents in theAcademic Depart-ment. Free tuition is given in the Academic Depart-ment to sons of ministers, to candidates for theministry, to young men under bodily infirmity, topublic school teachers and to those who intendto teach. 19

Graduate Department Admission The development of the University has made ita,*d necessary to enlarge the scope of the graduate egrees WOrk and to put a greater emphasis upon it. The irPaedC^tCe°sTudSents. growth of the faculty has rendered it possible tooffer many additional courses, and these nowform a distinct department of the University. The Graduate Department offers special advanced instructionin all the subjects named above under the College Department.The Degrees of Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy are con-ferred. Graduates of other institutions are admitted to thesecourses without examination, provided they can satisfy the pro-fessors whose courses they wish to attend that they are preparedto profit by the work offered. The attainment of the Universitydegrees by such students will depend upon their own ability andthe thoroughness of their previous preparation.
