s parts ofothers, including many good linen pattern panels, in the nave. The exterior of the Church is remarkable for the regularity of itsdesign—thus, the cornices—(although those of the nave, transepts,and clerestory are of different sections) are carried all round at thesame level. The side windows of the chancel and the four windowsin the transepts are alike in dimensions and design. Then theclerestory windows and those of the aisles are similar in design ;those of the north and south aisles only differ in height, owing to alocal circumstance. Parapets are carried round the whole of theroofs, and are repeated on the tower, those, however, on the northaisle and transept are plain, the rest being embattled. Diagonalbuttresses only occur in the porch, and may be taken as one of theindications of its being a somewhat later addition. All the rest ofthe buttresses stand square with the walls, and (excepting the lowones at the west angles of aisles) are carried up above the parapets.

By C. E% Pouting, F.S.A. 223 panelled, and surmounted by crocketted pinnacles. It is noticeablethat the side walls of aisles and clerestory are not buttressed. Thegables of the transepts are carried up within the parapets, the latterrnnning round horizontally, and the gutter coming between. Thegraceful lines of the coping where it is formed into a base for thecross are an instance of the exceeding beauty of the curves in thedesigns of this Church.1 The west front is notable for its unique window and doorway, towhich I shall have occasion to refer again. The doorway appears tohave been intended more as an architectural feature than for use, asthe splayed plinth of soft stone (which stands above the floor) iscarried through as a sill, and indicates little sign of wear. The low and broad proportions of the tower by their very dignitycause one the more to regret the absence of bolder outside mouldingsto the belfry windows, by which a somewhat meagre appearance isgiven them.
