UNITED STATES BATTI.E-SHIP. piling, on the lake front, In the northeast portion of Jackson Park,near the Government Bulldlnof. Water surrounds the Iron-cladsides of brick, and the structure has every appearance of beingmoored to a wharf. Upon Its decks are all the fittings that belongto the actual ship, such as guns, turrets, torpedo tubes, with boats,anchors, cables, awnings, etc. Officers, seamen, mechanics and ma-rines are detailed by the Navy Department during the Exposition,and the discipline and mode of life on our naval vessels are com-pletely shown. The crew gives certain drills, especially boat,torpedo and gun drills, as In a vessel of war. The dimensions ofthe structure are the same as those of the actual battle-ship ofwhich It is a model ; 348 feet In length, 69 feet and 3 Inches width

4^0 UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT. amidships, and from the water hne to the top of the main deck, 12feet. Centrally placed on this deck is a superstructure 8 feet high,with a hammock berthing on the same 7 feet high, and above theseare the bridge, chart house and the boats. At the forward end ofthe superstructure there is a cone-shaped tower called the militarymast, near the top of which are placed two circular tops asreceptacles for sharpshooters. Rapid-firing guns are mounted ineach of these tops. The height from the water line to thesummit of this military mast is j^^ feet, and above is placed aflag-staff for signalling. The battery mounted comprises four 13-inchbreech-loading rifle cannon; eight 8-inch breech-loading rifle cannon;four 6-inch breech-loading rifle cannon ; twenty 6-pounder rapid-firing guns; six i-pounder rapid-firing guns; two Gading guns,and six torpedo tubes or torpedo guns.
