Juneto September.Maine to Ontario and Wyoming,south to Tennessee, Texas, andArizona.Characteristic of this species, and of severalother Panic-grasses, are dense rosettes ofshort, broad, basal leaves, formed in au-tumn and noticeable during winter andspring. Hispid Panic-grass.destinum L. Pdnicum dan- Perennial. Stem 2-4 ft. tall, erect or ascending, branched.Sheaths usually longer than internodes,bristly with short, stiff hairs. Ligule veryshort. Leaves 2-9 long, 6-i2 wide,rough-margined, hairy on margins at base. Panicle 3-6 long, pyramidal, open, panicles onbranches usually included in upper sheaths.Spikelets i-flowered, oblong, about i long.Scales 4; ibt scale about \ as long asspikclet; flowering scale shining, enclosinga palet of similar texture. Illustrated Descriptions of the Grasses GREEN FOXTAIL, YELLOW FOXTAIL, BRISTLY FOX-TAIL, AND ITALIAN MILLET These are stoutgrasses, usually oc-curring as weeds incultivated lands and bywavsides, and blooming inheavy cylindrical spikes ofseed-like flowers. Both theGreen Foxtail (Seidria viridis)and the Yellow Foxtail are verycommon near gardens, and thesmooth stems, red-tinged at thebase, and bearing flattened sheathsand many leaves, are so character-istic of the genus that the grassesare easily recognized, even before theblossoming spikes appear. In bloom,the two species are distinguished fromone another by the colour of the clus-tered bristles which clothe the spikes, asthe bristles of Yellow Foxtail are yellow,or even yellowish brown, while the bristlesof Green Foxtail are green, as the nameimplies. Bristly Foxtail (Seidria vertictUata) isless common. It is a more slender spe-cies with smaller spikes whose few bristlesare downwardly barbed, thus differingfrom the two preceding speci
