Text Appearing Before Image:
of Holleycombe Lodge, the Memberfor the city of Wells. I have now to notice two communications in yourNovember number on this highly interesting subject—the Condition of Hunters. The first is a very ableLetter from Cheshire on the subject of clipping, towhich I shall allude more fully at a future opportunity ;but as the author, Equestris, asks my opinion, it is—that I would have every horse clipped that has gota long coat; and it would answer extremely well ifone or two men in the neighbourhood of every Huntwould perfect themselves in the art of doing it; forthey would have plenty of custom. Caution, how-ever, should be observed. Mr Farquharson lost oneof his best horses last season in consequence of ridinghim too soon after the operation was performed. Onthe other hand, Mr Bartlett, the dealer in Oxford Street, told me last season that his horse was clipped on theThursday, and on the Friday he swam a canal threetimes with the Berkeley stag-hounds, and no ill effectswere produced.
Text Appearing After Image:
BROOD MARES AND COLTS 215 The other letter which calls for my attention is fromthe same part of the world, and treats of the effectsof the late distemper among horses.^ It concludeswith the following passages :— Though I cannotsubscribe to all the doctrines advanced by youringenious correspondent Nimrod, yet I gladly addmy mite to the proof that it is a very mistaken notionto give hunters a summers run, under the idea offreshening their feet and legs. I can now call to mindfive hunters turned out last summer perfectly sound, and which became lame at grass. Now this I considera main prop to my argument, as it is evident the writerknows what he is about, if he be not a professionalman. If, as he asserts, the stable or loose house isthe best place for the legs and feet, no doubt can remainas to its being the best for the body, where extremesof heat and cold, as well as accidents, can be avoided—setting aside the folly of putting a load of flesh on ananimal, which must almost all come
