o Durham 25 suffered severely in the conflict, and a mock-bishop,supported by the Scots, actually held Durham Castleand City against the lawful prelate. At length morequiet days came, and in the reign of Henry II. BishopPudsey, the Kings own cousin, succeeded in resisting thecentralizing efforts of the monarch, and although he hadto bow to the imperious Henry on more than one occasion,he carried on in the main the liberties and rights of theBishopric. A little later he was enabled to round off theBishopric lands when he bought the wapentake ofSadberge from King Richard, the only important partof the county which had never yet been included in theterritory of St. Cuthbert. From this time the Earl ofNorthumbria disappears, and at last there is no rivalwhatsoever to powers which had been steadily growing.The Bishopric is now complete in head and members,and the Bishop is virtual sovereign of it, whilst the Kingis supreme outside.
