f Northumbria; finally, in the year 954, they weresuppressed, and the districts placed under the governmentof an earl. In Lancashire we find, in the names ofplaces, many traces of the settlements of Danes andSaxons—to these people may be attributed all the tons,hams, bys, rods, holts, and shaws so commonly found asterminatives. The available and reliable information about thisportion of the history of Lancashire is very slight. TheAnglo-Saxon Chronicle mentions that, in 937, Man-chester, in Northumbria, was almost reduced to ruins bya force of Mercians under King Edward, who afterwardsrepaired and manned the town. Near the close of thetenth century the part of Lancashire lying between theRibble and the Mersey was annexed to Mercia, andplaced ecclesiastically within the diocese of Lichfield;the parts of Lancashire north of the Ribble being in thearchdeanery of Richmond, and under the bishopric ofYork; and King David of Scotland claimed all Lanca-shire on the north side of the Ribble.
