ad now some six thousand inhabitants;Liverpool in 1673 was a bold, safe harbour, in which,at high-water, ships could ride at ten fathoms. Newtrades had also developed. The manufacture of fustians,linen and woollen cloths, and other fabrics was carriedon in several places. Pottery was extensively made inLiverpool. In many of the smaller towns were fulling,or, as they were called, walk mills; and in many of thecottages, and even in private houses, a pair of loomsformed part of the fittings. Two other Lancashire conspirators wereEdmund Threlfall, of Ashes, in Goosnargh, and ThomasTyldesley, of Myerscough Lodge. The plot was soondiscovered, and the Justices of the Peace at the adjournedQuarter Sessions at Manchester informed the Secretaryof State that the gaols were full of Irish RomanCatholics, and others were secreted in private houses, andalso that boxes containing weapons had been discovered.Lund and Threlfall and others were arrested and sentfor trial.
