Rising from the waters edgeand built in a horseshoe shape on the slopes of thehills, prior to the recent fire it was extremely pictur-esque. But with the exception of the comparativelynew street, which runs along the quay from the har-bour on the northwest to the residential quarter onthe southeast, the city was dirty and squalid, and itsthoroughfares were narrow and winding. Indeed, theoutstanding impression left upon ones mind was thatthe town constituted something isolated, somethingdifferent from that which exists elsewhere in Europe.In one sense it seemed to be completely modern,materialistic, and vulgar, whilst in another it hadthe appearance of being a sort of relic of the past.This may be accounted for partly by the fact thatthe nature of the population of Salonica is somethingquite unique.
