At a distance of 12 miles to the cast of it, on alonely rock, stands the Bell Rock Lighthouse. Carnoustie is merely a favourite watering-place, but Arbroath, though itsharbour is small, is a port of some importance, and manufactures canvas and sack-ing. It was fomous in former times for its abbey, of which only ruins nowexist. Montrose, on a sandy peninsula that almost shuts ofif from the sea theshallow bay into which the Southern Esk pours its waters, is a town of considerablecommerce, largely engaged in the linen trade, the manufacture of starch and Fig. 181.—DcxDEE AND THE Mouth of the Tay.Scale 1 : 250,000.
