Hammondand Marshall state thatunder these circum-stances the develop-ment of the mammaemay even proceed so faras to produce free se-cretion of milk. Ottand Scott have obtainedmarked development ofthe mammas, and evensecretion of milk, inyoung virgin rabbitsinjected subcutane-ously at frequent in-tervals for a monthwith extract of corpusluteum. It is further statedby Ancel and Bouinthat if all the corporalutea are destroyed ina pregnant rabbit thedevelopment of themammary gland is Metabolic Effects produced by Corpus Luteum 147

It must, however, be pointed out that it is next to impossible todestroy the corpora lutea without practically destroying all the ovariantissue, for the corpora lutea of the pregnant rabbit form by far thegreater mass of the ovary. This applies also to Fraenkels experiments(see below). An important function of the internal secretion of the ovary—perhapsof the corpus luteum—relates to the formation of the uterine deciduaand the fixation of the embryo. Fraenkel—working upon a hypothesissuggested b) Born—found that if in rabbits the corpora lutea are destroyedat an early period of pregnancy the embryo does not become adherent tothe mucous membrane of the uterus, and ceases to develop.
