f the mass toppling oversideways, ropes were attached to the top of thecasing, at the point where the beams crossed oneanother, and were held taut by two parties oflabourers, one on either side of the statue. Besidesthese, wooden forks or props were applied on eitherside to the second horizontal cross-beams, held alsoby men, whose business it would be to resist the leastinclination of the huge stone to lean to one side morethan to the other. The front of the sledge on whichthe colossus stood was curved gently upwards, to faci-litate its sliding along the ground, and to enable it to ^ Mr. Layard at first imagined thatthe contrary was the case (Ninevehand its Remains, vol. ii. p. 318) ; buthis Koyunjik discoveries convincedhim of his error (Nineveh and Baby-lon, pp-105, 106). The nineteenth century could make no improvement U)ion this.Mr. Layard tells us that preciselythe same framework was used formoving the great sculptures now inthe British Museum.
