Text Appearing Before Image:
back, in a low attic room, I beheld a pictureof abject misery. The mother was sick, and lay uncomfort-ably upon an old sofa, which, with two rickety chairs and alarge box, which served the double purpose of table andcupboard, were the only furniture of the apartment. Shewas totally dependent upon her little sons earnings for asustenance. She had nothing in the house to eat; no moneywith which to obtain anything. Her boys earnings hadfallen off unaccountably, and for two days they had not tastedfood. When she learned that he had brought in no money(for it was now near nightfall), she fell to weeping and up-braiding the lazy, idle wretch for not bringing home some-thing to eat. The boy began to cry bitterly, and acknowl-edged his error in spending his earnings for confectionery.I then exacted a solemn promise from him that he neverwould buy another pennys worth of the poison, gave himsome change to purchase a bountiful meal, and left with adetermination to ventilate street candy stands.
