Text Appearing Before Image:
Prehistoric Etruscan Pottery essentially the same as the chiton and himation of the Greeks, started as a fashion introduced by their more civilised northernneighbours. It seems clear also that the earliest Roman art, thedecoration of temples with painted terra-cotta ornaments, wasEtruscan in origin. Some of the earliest statues of the godsseem to have been painted, for we hear of a very ancientred Jupiter. Thus there is some probability that Rome passedthrough a period, perhaps in the sixth century, of alien ruleand alien civilisation. Remembering the cousinship betweenGreece and Etruria we shall find that Rome had been pre-pared for the reception of Greek culture in very earlytimes. 22
Text Appearing After Image:
> <D . THE BEGINNINGS OF ROME The fifth century seems to have been a period of declinefor the Etruscan power. The Greek republics, with, as Ihope we agreed, their northernstiffening, had advanced farbeyond their Etruscan kinsmenin intelligence, and the tyrantHiero of Syracuse defeatedthem in a great sea-fight in474 B.C. It is agreeable to the historian to have a factso certain and a date so wellattested in all the wildernessof legend that surrounds theearly history of Italy. Thenthe warlike hill tribes of theSouthern Apennines began topress upon their southerncolonies, and finally the Gaulsfrom the north swept downupon Etruria at the beginningof the fourth century and brokeup their declining empire forever. It was probably duringthis period that the Romans ex-pelled their Etruscan princes, and replaced royalty by a pairof equal colleagues sharingmost of the royal power andregal emblems except crownand sceptre. So we get to the Rome of the earliestcredible tradition — a Romegovern
