The road passes through a dense forest, touchingthe stations Gillmore, Spurlock, Plum, Bush Prairie and Tumwater, thelatter a lively manufacturing village, with fine water power, on theoutskirts of Olympia. The capital is delightfully situated at the head
Text Appearing After Image:
Tacoma. 263 of Hoods Canal. It has now about 2,000 inhabitants, and is constantlygrowing in population and wealth. All the United States officials in theTerritory are stationed here, and give tone to the society of the city. Thestreets are broad and well shaded, and the principal thoroughfare is linedwith stores. Churches, schools, a newspaper, a bank and several hotels areamong the features of the place. Thurston County, in which Olympia issituated, is densely wooded, and lumbering is a leading industry. There isa great extent of prairie and bottom land in the county, adapted to stockraising and mixed farming. The Northern Pacific Eailroad deflects eastward after leaving Tenino, and at Yelm Prairie, fourteen miles beyond, there is a revelation of unsur-passed grandeur, provided the sky be cloudless, in the view of MountTacoma, the loftiest of all the snow mountains. As the train rushes on-ward, occasional breaks in the forest allow the sight of this snow-clad peakto great advantage. I
