The tavern was used for other purposes than for indig-nation or political meetings of the inhabitants. It wasthe meeting place of St. Andrews and similar societiesand of the governors of Kings College, who probablyfound it more comfortable to transact business in its genialatmosphere with a bottle of good wine before them thanin the cold halls of education. Musical concerts were alsogiven within the walls of the tavern and in the extensivegrounds attached. In 1777, these gardens saw a fatalduel between Captain Tollemache of the Royal Na\y andCaptain Pennington of the Coldstream Guards. Theduel was with swords; and a few days after the hostilemeeting. Captain Tollemache was buried in Trinitychurchyard. Burns remained here as host until 1770, when he wassucceeded by Bolton, who came from the Queens Head(Fraunces); later, Hull assumed charge and had the honor

65 66 The Worlds Greatest Street of entertaining John Adams and his colleagues, who wereon their way to the first meeting of the ContinentalCongress in Philadelphia in 1775. When the British left the city in November, 1783,John Cape leased the tavern and changed its name tothe State Arms; and on the second of December a greatentertainment was given in honor of Washington and thereturn of peace. It had various hosts until 1792, when theproperty passed out of the possession of the De Lanceysand into that of the Tontine Association, which demolishedthe old building and erected the City Hotel on the site,the first building in the city to be roofed with slate.
