sculpture in compartment B was probablyintended as an allegorical representation of the Virgin triumphing over the Dragon, or Satan, throughthe power of the Cross. In compartment C the sitting figure would seem to represent our Saviour,who is surrounded by his worshippers. The detached capitals marked A, E, and D, are copied fromthose that crown the shafts which support the trefoil-headed arches, and are here given to shewtheir variety and richness; the order of the initials points out their relative positions. t Keepe, who wrote his Monumenta TVestmonasteriensia in 1681, speaking of the Chapel ofSt. Michael, says, * this Chapel, with part of the Chapels of St. John the Evangelist and St. Andrew,are now taken up (and the monuments almost covered) by the scaffolds placed here, being made use ofat present for the Lower Convocation House for the Deans, Prebends, Doctors, &c. as that of KingHenry VII. is for the Archbishops and Bishops, when the Parliament sits at Westminster. P. 170.
