The troops hadthrown open a corner grocery with the usual orderthat the crowd might carry off all it contained exceptthe liquors. A large party of men made a rush forthe place and emerged with quantities of whisky.When called upon to drop them, they failed to obeyand a volley was fired upon them. No mercy was shown to those that defied calls tohalt. The rifle was leveled with the first order, and,on the failure of a second command to stop the of-fender, it was discharged. One man on Market Street, who was found diggingin the ruins of a jewelry shop, was discovered by anaval service man and fired upon three times. Thefellow sought safety in flight, but the reserve manbrought him down by running his bayonet throughhim.
