Some are good trotters and yet bad gallopers, andthey are consequently as well fitted for harness work asthey are unsuited for hunting. A great number of gigsiersare also under-sized carriage horses, which latter are theproduce of Cleveland or Clydesdale mares by well-bred 01even thorough-bred horses. Until lately the Clevelandmare was almost the sole origin, on the dams side, of ourbest carriage horses ; but latterly the Clydesdale mare hasbeen very extensively used, and with much better success ;inasmuch as the produce are much more hardy, and though,perhaps, not quite so level, yet more blood-like, and theirlegs and feet much more firm and enduring. The Cavalry horse may be considered under threeseveral heads: first, the charger, or officers horse; secondly,the heavy trooper; and thirdly, the light trooper. He must have good shoulders,so as to be able to use his fore-legs; and his hind quar-ters should be so formed as to give complete command ofthe whole weight which he carries; in other words, hemust be well upon his haunches. Most chargers are atleast 16 hands high, and some still higher. The HeavyTroop Horse is a discarded hunter, that is, a horse bredfor that purpose, but considered too heavy to gallop thepace which is wanted. He is therefore sold at troop-horseprice, which in time of peace was ^24, now somewhatraised. The household troops are mounted on blackhorses, some of which are bred expressly for the regimentsby Yorkshire breeders, and others imported from Belgium.The Light Troop Horses are obtained from all sources,and many of them now, as might be expected from theprice, are very wooden and inferior anim
