hich aresaid to be tracks of the sun and moon, bear some rela-tion to this belief. One of our informants, an old wizard,told us that the sun rose into the heavens from the SacredRock, in the shape of a big flame. But he also added that**the sun was the child of a woman whom he calledMama-Ojllia, who was the mother of Manco Capac.About the origin of the moon he professed to be ignorant. In very ancient times, said he, the Island was in-habited by gentlemen (caballeros) similar to the vira-cochas (name given to whites by the Indians to-day).Whence these gentlemen came he knew not. They hadintercourse with the women of the people, and the childrenwere deposited in caves, where they were kept alive bywater dripping from the rock of the ceiling. After a certaintime the mothers went to look after their offspring andfound them alive and well. About theInca he remembered the names of Manco Capac, Viracocha,Huayna Capac, Eoca, Huascar, and Atahuallpa, saying ofHuascar that the Spaniards killed him near the Island.^ In a subsequent conversation the wizard stated thatAtauhuallpa lived on the Island and Huascar at Cuzco, andthat after the time of the *Inga-Re the Lake once dried upso completely that people from Huaicho came over on footand killed the Chullpa then living on Titicaca.
