is to be built next year. The town is on thaPecos Valley and Northeastern Railway which built a prettybrick depot recenty at Carlsbad, Artesia. The discovery of artesian water in northern Eddy Countyhas resulted in the founding of the flourishing town of Ar-tesia, on the P. V. & N. E. Ry., which already boasts of a bank,a weekly newspaper, the Artesia Advocate, and a number ofbusiness houses. Its population is nearing the one thousandmark and the town is growing rapidly, every quarter sectionfor miles around having been taken up by settlers. Grant County. This county is not only by far the heaviest mineral producerbut it is also one of the leading stock counties of New Mexico.Its area is 7,432 square miles; its population 12,500; its as-sessed valuation in 190B was $2,912,977; its annual mineral pro-duction $1,500,000; assessed valuation of its cattle $1,000,000,the actual value being fully three times as much. The postoffices are: Bayard, Central, Cliff, Dwyer, Fay wood, Fierro,

The county has good railroad facilities. It is crossed in thesouthern part by the Southern Pacific Railroad and the ElPaso and Southwestern Railway. In addition the Santa FeRailway enters it and has two branches, one from White-water to Santa Rita and the other from Hanover Junction toFierro. The Lordsburg Hachita Railway is entirely withinthe county and the Arizona and New Mexico Railroad has itsterminus at Lordsburg. The count3^s area is equal to that of the State of New Jer-sey and 4,000,000 acres are still subject to entry underthe land laws. The diversity of its industries has made thiscounty one of the best and most prosperous. In its north-western part the Gila, and in its eastern portion the Mimbres,furnish water for irrigation and there are about 150,000
