Prices are high, being governedby the price of the foreign product plus the transportationcharges, therefore the home product has the best of it. It isevident that the New Mexico farmer is taking advantage ofthese favorable conditions, for the number of dozens of eggsproduced increased from 1890 to 1900 from 280,000 to 840,000,yet there is need of a greatly increased production to supplythe demand. Fruit growing in the horticultural sections is assuminglarge proportions, with practically no serious obstacle in theway of its becoming still greater, provided proper precautionst) keep down insect and fungus pests are taken, as is donein other fruit growing states. New Mexicos orchardsare equal to, if not superior, to those anywhere in the UnitedStates. Of all the fruits, the apple is the most extensive and themost profitable crop. Notwithstanding the topography of theTerritory, this fruit is well adapted to the different horticul-tural sections.
