ne were an outdoor man at all,it was because one loved the great world of out-of-doors, and was bound to get there somehow. My father was strongly attached to the moun-tains and other forms of wild nature; to the end ofhis life he remembered with deep pleasure his dayson Mt. Katahdin or Mt. Washington, his experiencein Howes Cave or at Trenton Falls. Even in themidst of the cares and worries of the Civil War thegreat relief was to escape from the city and walkfor a week in the mountains. But he also lovedthe simpler and more particular forms of nature;he was immensely fond of flowers.
