Beneath this cloud of adversity, General Washing-ton shone, perhaps with a brighter lustre, than in theday of his highest prosperity. Not dismayed by allthe difficulties which encompassed him, he accommo-dated his measures to his situation, and still made thegood of his country the object of his unwearied pur-suit. He ever wore the countenance of composureand confidence ; by his own example inspiring his lit-tle band with firmness to struggle with adverse fortune. 1776 J LIFE OF WASHINGTON. 109 After an unsuccessful attempt to procure boats topass the Delaware, General Howe cantoned his armyin New-Jersey, intending to wait until the frost ofwinter should furnish him with an easy passage uponthe ice to Philadelphia. He stationed four thousandmen along the Delaware at Trenton, Bordentown, theWhite Horse, and Burlington. And the residue of hisforce, he posted between the Delaware and the Hackensack. General Washington ordered the American galleysto keep the river, narrowly to watch the enemy, andto give the earliest notice of their movements. Heposted hir troops upon the south side of the Delaware,in situations the most favourable to guard the fordsand ferries ; and he gave written instructions to thecommanding officer of each detachment, directingwhat passes he should defend, if driven from his post,on his retreat to the heights of Germantown.
