Othersclaimed to subject the Word of God totheir own reason, as though he had notconstituted a living authority to expoundand define it. The sovereign Pontiff thenearnestly appeals to their eminent piety toexert themselves with all solicitude andzeal, in exhorting the faithful not to sufferthemselves to be led away under any spe-cious pretexts of human progress. He warns them against the secret so-cieties condemned by so many sovereignPontiffs, and to the religious indifferenceso constantly inculcated; against the per-verse theories of education, the flood ofbad books and periodicals, depraving menand banishing from their hearts all reli-gious influences.
