, though the body of the towns people will sympathize withus all in the regret that the home site and the center of his lifework could not have been selected and appropriated for this dis-tinguished monument of his labors. It is a grand donation! Itrepresents so much, not only of the local fauna of that interestingregion, but so much persevering study, devotion and effort ofpursuit. I have not been able to obtain a classified memorandum of theG. A. Boardman collection, but I have been told by the proprietorthat there were more than 3,000 birds and perhaps half that numberof mammals and miscellaneous subjects, including many marinecuriosities. The world of science cannot well spare such con-tributors as George A. Boardman and George N. Lawrence; bothof them gone within a decade. The city of Fredericton, the home of the Boardmancollection, is the capital of New Brunswick and issituated on a beautiful intervale on the west side of theSt. John river, about eighty miles from its mouth, and

THE BOARDMAN COLLECTION 109 twenty-two miles by rail from Fredericton Junction onthe Canadian Pacific Railroad. Its population is some-thing over 7,000, and its public buildings include theParliament House and public offices of the Provincialgovernment; eight churches ; an Episcopal cathedral;a normal school for the training of teachers ; the Vic-toria Hospital; city hall, and the University of NewBrunswick. In the assembly chamber of the ParliamentHouse are many historic portraits including those ofGeorge III. and of his amiable consort, Queen Charlotte,painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds, with those of LordSheffield and of Lord Glenelg. The Legislative Libraryembraces 14,000 volumes, one of the most highly prizedworks which it contains being one of the original foliosets of Audubons Birds of America which formerlybelonged to King Louis Philippe of France, father of theDuke of Orleans, now valued at $15,000.
