Tacoma (1,935 ^^^iles from St. Paul; population, 40,000) isthe western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad and thepoint where it meets the commerce of the Pacific Ocean. Itis situated upon the tide water of the Pacific near the head ofPuget Sound, and occupies a commanding position both as aseaport and a railroad centre. The arm of the Sound uponwhich the city fronts is called Commencement Bay, and fur-nishes an excellent harbor, where the largest ocean steamersand sailing vessels lie at anchor or receive their cargoes ofcoal, lumber, wheat, and other products of the region, at thespacious wharves, coal bunkers and warehouses. Tacoma has had an extraordinarily rapid growth. Whenselected (1872) as the Pacific Coast terminus of the NorthernPacific Railroad, the site was covered with a dense forest. The Cascaderange can be seen for nearly a hundred miles from north tosouth, and Mt. Tacorna, one of the loftiest snow peaks inthe United States, rises to a height of 14,444 ^eet, 10,000feet of which are covered with snow fields and glaciers.This superb mountain, which has no rival in the world forbeauty and grandeur is in plain view from all the terracesof the new city. Tacoma is, next to San Francisco, themost important wheat-shipping port on the Pacific Coast.It also ships more lumber and more coal than any other porton that coast.
