seen ris-ing almost from the sea level to heights far above theclouds. The whole of the Cascade range from MountRainier to Mount Baker, its two white monarchs, is seenon the eastern horizon, and on the nearer western horizonrise the frowning rocky, snow-flecked walls of the Olym-pic mountains. All the shores are densely clad with ever-green forests. The waters of the sound are a clear sea-green and are enlivened .by flocks of waterfowl. Seagullsfollow the steamer and swoop down with clamorous criesfor refuse from the tables thrown overboard by the stew-ards or for crackers tossed out by the passengers, whofind much amusement in watching the movements ofthese tireless birds. Now and then a school of porpoisesmay be seen leaping out of the water in sportive, curvingbounds. The steamers on this route are large and handsomelyequipped. A boat leaves Tacoma every morning, arrivingin Victoria late in the afternoon and arriving in Tacomaon the return trip early next morning. Travelers should,

264 The Northern Pacific Bailroad, however, arrange to spend a day in Victoria. The Soundis divided in its lower length by the large island ofWhidby, which is thirty miles long. The Victoria boatstake the western side of this island and call at Port Town-send. Another line of boats run east of the island as faras New Whatcom, calling at Everett, Anacortes and Fair-haven. Both lines touch at Seattle, which is the empor-ium of the middle Sound. Seattle (41 miles from Tacoma by rail, and 27 miles bywater, and 1,933 miles from St. Paul via the Cascade di-vision; population, 80,000). This handsome and prosperouscity is one of the oldest places on Puget sound, and wasan important center of trade before Tacoma was founded.Its steady growth has not been checked by the rapid riseof the new city on Commencement bay.
