with yard space on either side. The main building,with the steps and approaches, is 87 feet front by 187 feetdeep. A massive portico of 8 columns 27 feet high, support-ing a pediment, gives to the front an imposing appearancewhich attracts the attention of strangers. A similar portico isin the rear. The main business-room extends from east towest, is 48 feet wide and 81 feet deep. An arched ceiling withmoulded panels supported on marble Ionic columns finishes theapartment. It is 35 feet from the floor to the crown of the arch. The northern portion of the building, including the mainhall, is appropriated to the use of the Custom-house, withapartments for the various officers. The portion of the build-ing which fronts on Library street is occupied by the UnitedStates Treasury department as a sub-treasury office. The principal business transacted in the Custom-house de-partment is connected with tlie collection of the revenuesupon imported goods, (he adjustments of duties, etc. 11 * 125

CUSTOM-HOUSE, ETC. 127 The baggage of passengers arriving direct in Philadelphiafrom foreign countries is examined on board the vessel in theriver or in dock, and the regulations in reference to what isdutiable are printed and supplied to passengers in advance bythe officers of the ship. UNITED STATES TREASURERS OFFICE. The assistant treasurer of the United States receives therevenues and moneys which are payable to the Federal gov-ernment. He is also the disbursing officer for all amountsdue from the government. In this connection particularlyare to be noted the operations of the office in regard to thedebt of the United States, the transfer of loans and bonds,and the payment of interest to bondholders when due. This building is open to visitors from 9 to 3 oclock. Theycan enter freely and examine the interior allotted to thepublic. Chestnut street cars going east pass this building. By the charter of Pennsylvania the right of the king to collectthe royal customs was reserved,
