THE EXCAVATIONS 41 unbroken vases. To show the abundance of our booty, I givethe photograph of one of the rooms in which Dr. Pernierleft in their places the beautiful perfect cups and some other vasesof red clay with white and yellow designs and graceful curves,jugs and lamps of various shapes, some with pedestal and otherswith a long handle, made of red clay (Fig 11). In the nextroom were found vases like our fruit dishes, which had thehandle in the centre of the concavity. I saw brought out fromthe charcoal a very delicate cup of brown clay, with an impresseddesign of shells, and a small spherical vase resembling the fruit ofthe horse-chestnut. On one side are the excrescences of theouter shell ; on the other side it is smooth like an Indianchestnut which is just opened and shows the fruit. It wassupposed that this tree came from Central Asia, and for thatreason it received the name of Indian Chestnut, but it is nowknown that it lives in a wild state in Greece. The little vasewhich
