There are at the present time few, if any, orphanages in theUnited States that are making adequate provision for the playof their children, or where efficient leadership is furnished.But there are two institutions that are worthy of mentionfor what they have done along these fines. Girard College was founded under the will of StephenGirard at the beginning of the last century and now has anendowment that amounts to nearly seventy millions of dollars.It has about forty acres of ground which is located in a thicklybuilt-up section in the northern part of Philadelphia. Itsbuildings are all of white marble. It contains fifteen hundredchildren from the ages of seven to eighteen. The healthand physical training in the classrooms is carefully lookedafter. The children have an opportunity to learn a numberof trades. They also have considerable time and space forplay. The college has recently employed seven physicaldirectors to have charge of the play. Girard is built on themodel of the English Public School. It produces some verysuperior baseball and football teams and there is ampleopportunity for the older boys to play tennis. Moving pic-tures are being shown one or two evenings a week after or justbefore supper, and phonograph entertainments are given atcertain times. The smaller children have a story periodright after supper in most of the dormitories.
