d ofreinforced concrete. The building comprises three floors,the rooms being arranged round an open patio, and mostof them opening on to broad verandahs. The billiard- andball-rooms are lofty apartments, the latter measuring70 ft. by 30 ft. The grounds cover about 177 acres, andthe main approach is by a drive hedged in with manybeautiful palms, and is gay with hibiscus, poinsettia, andmany flowering shrubs. The historic town of Port Royal stands at the extremityof the spit of sand known as the Palisadoes, which protectsKingston Harbour. It can be reached by Governmentlaunch from the Ordnance Wharf (see page 166). It is of greathistoric interest, and was, prior to the earthquake ofJune 7, 1692, considered the finest town in the WestIndies, and at that time the richest spot in the universe,being as it was the headquarters of the buccaneers, andas such the emporium and mart of their ill-gotten wealth. It was a sadsight to see the harbour covered with dead bodies of people ofall conditions, floating up and down without burial, for the bury-ing place was destroyed by the earthquake, which dashed topieces tombs, and the sea washed the carcases of those who hadbeen buried out of their graves. At Green Bay, across the harbour, there is still to be seenthe tomb of Lewis Galdy, a native of Montpelier in France,a merchant, Member of the Assembly, and Churchwardenof Port Royal, who was swallowed up by the earthquake,and by the providence of God was, by another shock,thrown into the sea and saved.
