. Twobids were received for this ship : one from F. W. Wheelerof West Bay City, Mich., for $245,000 ; the other fromSamuel L. Moore & Company of Elizabethport, N. J., for$250,000, both on the Department plans. The appropria-tion limit is $260,000. The Department has awarded the contract for armoredcruiser No. 2 (the 8,100-ton ship) to the Cramp & SonsCompany on their second bid of $2,985,000, accepting thechanges in design proposed by them. The contract forcruiser No. 6 (the 5,500-ton vessel) is given to the UnionIron Works, San Francisco, on their first bid of $1,796,000,on the Department plans. Samuel L. Moore & Companyreceive the contract for the practise ship on their bid. ENGINEERING IN THE FAR EAST.
