During the six orseven hours that I had been in the presence of these brownmasses of masonry, and among the yellow sands out of whichthey spring, I had become familiar with their external forms andscenic values. My mind had been unconsciously at work, andnow as I drove back in the quiet evening the impressions ofthe day began to shape themselves in thought. The antiquityof the Pyramids and their historic interest is alone sufficient togive them an incontestable claim to the consideration of mankind.But is this antiquarian interest, I asked myself, in itself suffi-cient to account for the fascination which they undoubtedlyexert over the mind of the spectator ? I felt that I could notlimit myself to the antiquarian standpoint, but that I must tryto form some wider estimate of their qualities in which theirsesthetic significance would be included. From this
