PRIMITIVE CARRIAGE IN AFGHANISTAN. Afghanistan comprises the mountainous regionbetween Northwestern India and Eastern Persia,its extreme dimensions being about six hundredmiles miles north and south and a like distanceeast and west. Its roads are few and poorlymaintained, as in all semi-civilized countries.The precursor of the public highway, the narrowpath of the primitive savage, is the chief avenueof commerce. Along its narrow way commercedrifts through the valleys and in and out amongthe gorges and mountain passes. The countryis rugged and mountainous. Its population isdivided into settled communities and tentdwellers or semi-nomadics. The great wealth ofthe latter consists of herds. While Afghanistanhas a central ruler, the community is made up oftribes and clans as in the early ages of a peoplesdevelopment. The Afghans have fine physiques,and are said to be extremely vain of their history,persons and acquirements. They are said topossess cruelty and love of bloodshed, character-
