e secessionists were mostly young men, whowere both ambitious and fanatical, and who had been led astrayby artful demagogues, who had an ax to grind. They werenoisy, and many of them, before the sun had reached its meri-dian were drunk. They were chiefly of that class of floaters,who have no interest at stake, and whose dissolute habits arethe bane of the society in which they flourish. The Unionists,on tlie other hand, were generally venerable men who had donemuch service during the many wars in which the State had beeninvolved. They had fought to render Texas independent, andhad given their voice for her annexation to the Union; and *heystrenuously resisted a faction which proposed to undo the workwhich had cost them so much. They possessed property andcharacter, and were not to be swayed by every demagogue Avhosought preferment and office. Such was the condition of affairsas far as my observation extended; such, I learned, was thesituation throughout the State on that eventful day.

Soon after it became known that the secessionists had carriedthe State at the election, the commanders of the various UnitedStates posts commenced surrendering to the State troops. I•was present at the capitulation of Camp Colorado at the requestof a number of Union men, who desired to obtain accurate in-formation regarding the nature of the proceeding. The insur-gent forces were under the command of Henry MCulloch, who,knowing that I had seen service, pledged me a captains com-mission, if I would join the Confederate army; and had Idone so, I have every reason to believe he would have made hispromise good; but I refused his offer firmly. After I had witnessed the capitulation, I returned to Waco.The Ordinance of Secession had been passed and referred to thepeople, and the whole State was in a blaze of excitement.
