Theattraction of valuable stakes has overcome thedifficulties of distance, and the racing armytravels from Poona in September to Calcutta inDecember, and westward again to Bombay inFebruary. Detachments halt by the way for theDecember and February meets in Lucknow,while the stewards at Bangalore in July and atMeerut in March endeavour with indifferentsuccess to extend the limits of the season.Stakes, value Rs.1500 (/loo) and over, areoffered on these six courses alone, the steeple-chases at Tollygunge being considered as anitem in the January programme in Calcutta.

RACING AND STEEPLE-CHASING 427 With the exception of Bangalore and Poona, Courses,where some attempt can be made to imitate theelasticity of English turf, Indian race-courses aremostly level and very hard. The absence ofstraight courses is very noticeable. Noneof the larger courses can boast even a straightfive furlongs, and on the Bombay and Calcuttatracks the run in does not exceed three furlongs.For training purposes special tan or litter tracksare provided at all the principal centres, but cannever be more than a makeshift, and few fore-legs can stand more than two or three seasonsof racing.
