ighteenth and Walnut Streets is Rittenhouse Square, one of thefinest of the public parks. It is adorned with elaborate drinking-foun-tains, the gifts of wealthy philanthropists, and is surrounded by elegantand costly dwellings, this being one of the most aristocratic quartersof Philadelphia. An especially noticeable residence is that of JosephHarrison, Jr., on the east side of the Square, a view of which is here-with presented. Farther on, at Nineteenth Street, we pass the Church of the HolyTrinity; at Twenty-first Street the Second Presbyterian Church, a newand elegant structure, and at Twenty-second Street St. James Church(Episcopal). UNION LEAGUE The Union League is a well-known social organization, the out-growth of a union club which was formed in 1862, for promoting friendlyintercourse among loyal people. The organization of the League waseffected the same year, and it at once took an active part in all publicmeasures. For several years it wielded a powerful political influence.
