LEVEN (Loch),-J* a beautiful expanse of water,f * The name, Lochleven, finely discriminates its gentle im-agery, L/wa, Brit., Loch, Gall., signify a lake, an inlet ofthe sea, a large diffusion of inland water. X ^ 5 v< 1 LOCH-LEVEN. 259 in the immediate neighbourhood of the burgh of Kin-ross, and in the south-east quarter of the small shire ofthat name. Its circumference is about 10 or 11 miles;and its bosom is studded with several little islands,which break the uniformity of its surface and increaseits beauty. The general character of the scenerywhich surrounds it is soft and gentle, and not alto-gether deficient in variety. The vale of Kinrossenvirons it on the west and north-west, with all itsvariety of plantations, arable and pasture-fields, plea-sure-grounds and other materials of rural beauty.On this side, also, close to the margin of the lake,are seen the ancient town of Kinross, and Kinross-house, with its adjacent garden and grounds : seeKinross. About a mile east from this, also nearthe lake, are the ruins of Burleigh-castle : whichsee.
