Atlast they came to the river and plunged into its waterand in the course of time reached their different shoals. There they felt strong. They all laughed and said, Now we are at home in the water and can fight thenjokoos. But they added sadly, What a pity thatwe did not get our full night meal, the grass tasted sogood! It is the custom of the ngooboos living in thisriver to cross the prairie and bathe in the AtlanticOcean two or three times a year. Text Appearing After Image:
THE NGOOBOO, OR HIPPOPOTAMUS arrived on the beach. The ngooboos were greatlyexcited. They talked among themselves. Therewas great rejoicing among them. They sniffed thesea breeze and looked at the surf and at the broad seabefore them and wondered why there was not a shoreon the other side as on the river. They trampedaround on the beach for quite a while. Then the leaders of the different families said to theirfollowers, Let us go into the sea. They gruntedand snorted on the way, walked slowly through thesurf, and losing their footing began to swim, thoughthey did not dare to go far. They grunted loudlyand threw water several feet high through theirnostrils, as they did on the river. They had a grand time. How they enjoyed theirsea bath ! How they laughed ! Their loud snortsand grunts were heard by all the creatures in theneighborhood. After they landed, they said to each other, Whatfine fun we had in the sea ! Then they went to theprairie and grazed, and enjoyed their meal heartily.G
